Yufuin
Tamanoyu, Kamenoi Besso and ENOWA sit in the basin under Mount Yufu. Tamanoyu opened in 1953 as the rest house of a Zen temple, and most of its rooms are cottages scattered through woodland. Kamenoi Besso keeps detached cottages in a large garden beside Lake Kinrin, with hot-spring water from a source in the garden. ENOWA's restaurant is led by a chef formerly of Blue Hill at Stone Barns in New York.

Kurokawa, and what MICHELIN has not reached
Kurokawa Onsen has no MICHELIN Key at all — not one property in the whole town is in MICHELIN's 2026 Key selection. Takefue is here on a Ryokan Collection membership instead: twelve detached rooms, and the house states that all thirty of its baths run free-flowing from the source.

Kagoshima, Saga, Nagasaki and Kumamoto
Gajoen at Myoken keeps eight rooms in relocated thatched farmhouses and serves chicken from its own farm; Chikurintei is eleven rooms inside Mifuneyama Rakuen, a garden from 1845 at Takeo Onsen in Saga. Both hold two Keys. Hanzuiryo, at Unzen Onsen, and GOTO RETREAT ray, on the Goto islands about 1 hr 25 min by jetfoil from Nagasaki Port, each hold one Key.
