Yufuin
Three of the region's rated houses sit in one small basin under Mount Yufu. Tamanoyu and Kamenoi Besso are the two that shaped what a modern ryokan looks like in Japan — low buildings scattered through gardens rather than one block with a corridor — and ENOWA is the newest reading of the same idea, with a farm behind it.

Kurokawa, and what MICHELIN has not reached
Kurokawa Onsen has no MICHELIN Key at all — not one property in the whole town appears in MICHELIN's Japan index. Takefue is here on a Ryokan Collection membership instead: twelve detached rooms over 5,000 tsubo, and the house states that all thirty of its baths run free-flowing from the source.

Kagoshima, Saga and Nagasaki
The two-Key houses of the region are here. Gajoen at Myoken keeps eight rooms in converted farmhouses and raises much of what it serves; Chikurintei is eleven rooms in Ureshino. Hanzuiryo looks over Nagasaki from Inasa, and GOTO RETREAT ray is on the Goto islands, an hour and a half out to sea.
Kagoshima, Saga, Nagasaki and Kumamoto
Okinawa is counted separately here and not in this list. Three Okinawa properties had been filed under Kyushu until 2026-09-11; a guide to Kyushu that opened with a Miyakojima beach resort would simply have been wrong.
