Tenku no Mori
Tenku no Mori

Gajoen founder Tateo Tajima cleared a bamboo-covered hill from 1994 to open Tenku in 2004: three overnight villas, each with its own open-air bath, on an estate whose terraced fields grow more than 30 kinds of vegetables for the kitchen.

Tenku no Mori is a hilltop resort in Kirishima, Kagoshima, opened in 2004 by Tateo Tajima, founder of the inn Gajoen, on land he began clearing in 1994. It has three villas for overnight stays - Tenku, Akanesasu Oka and Rinu no Mori - each with its own open-air bath (Akanesasu Oka's looks out over the Kirishima mountains), plus two day-use villas. Meals are served at the Pavilion restaurant and are built around vegetables from the estate's terraced fields, where more than 30 kinds are grown, and chickens raised on its own farm. The resort is about 15 minutes by car from Kagoshima Airport.
