Kanamean Nishitomiya is a small inn on Tominokoji-dori in Kyoto's Nakagyo ward, in a deep two-storey building of the traditional 'eel's bed' type. It has eight sukiya-style guest rooms, each furnished differently, plus private dining rooms; rooms sleep two to four, and the suite Wakana has a hinoki-wood bath. Dinner is a choice between the inn's seasonal kaiseki course and Kaname, a contemporary Kyoto kaiseki counter dinner cooked on teppan and charcoal, with wine from a cellar of about 1,000 bottles; breakfast is Kyoto obanzai or continental. There is no elevator, so upper-floor rooms are reached by stairs, and children are accepted at reduced rates.
