The forest approach to Aman Kyoto

Kyoto’s Two-Key Stays: Four Houses Compared

Kyoto’s four two-Key stays are not variations on one idea. One is a forest retreat of 26 rooms, one an 89-room hotel with natural onsen suites, one an eight-room ryokan, and one a nine-suite house by Tadao Ando. The tier is the same; the product is not.

Four houses, four formats

The catalogue records the split plainly: two brand hotels, one ryokan and one auberge. Aman Kyoto has 26 rooms; Capella Kyoto 89; Kanamean Nishitomiya eight; The Shinmonzen nine. If the stay is meant to feel like a house, the last two are the ones to look at; if it is meant to have a spa and several restaurants, the first two are.

Aman Kyoto: forest and space

Twenty-six rooms in a forest garden at the foot of Hidari Daimonji, in Takagamine. The rooms are styled as a minimalist homage to the ryokan, and the range runs from rooms and a one-bedroom suite with a tatami room to two-bedroom pavilions. The Aman Spa uses mineral-rich spring water; dinner is at Taka-An (omakase-style Japanese) or The Living Pavilion. The hotel gives about 30 minutes by car from Kyoto Station.

Capella Kyoto: onsen suites in Miyagawa-cho

Eighty-nine rooms, including 29 suites, all of at least 50 m², arranged around a courtyard in Miyagawa-cho beside Kenninji Temple. Six Onsen Suites have their own natural onsen bath, and the Auriga Spa has three private onsen rooms. Dining includes SoNoMa by SingleThread, the first international outpost of the three-Michelin-starred SingleThread, plus Lanterne and YOI kappo. The MICHELIN Guide records an opening in March 2026.

Kanamean Nishitomiya: eight rooms

Eight sukiya-style rooms, each furnished differently, in a deep two-storey building on Tominokoji-dori. The suite Wakana has a hinoki-wood bath, and private baths are recorded in some rooms. Dinner is either the inn’s seasonal kaiseki or Kaname, a counter dinner cooked on teppan and charcoal. It is about 10 minutes on foot from Shijo Station, and children are accepted at reduced rates.

The Shinmonzen: nine suites by Tadao Ando

Nine suites on Shinmonzen Street in Gion Shirakawa, designed by Tadao Ando with other artists. Each suite is accented by a different natural material, most have hinoki cypress bathtubs and balconies over the Shirakawa, and some have tatami bedrooms with futon beds. Jean-Georges at The Shinmonzen serves breakfast, lunch and dinner; breakfast is included with suite stays. The hotel gives about 15 minutes by car from Kyoto Station.

Prices are in US dollars, converted from the yen the properties quote at the Oct 7, 2026 reference rate, and are indicative.

A price marked ≈ is itself an estimate: halved from a published two-person total, or rounded from an earlier figure. Totals for 2 assume two guests sharing one room.
