Rated Villa Stays: A Building to Yourself
Some of the rated stays are not rooms in a house at all, but a whole building you take over — no corridor, no neighbours, often a private pool or bath and a kitchen of your own. It is the format for a honeymoon, a family that wants its own walls, or anyone who would rather not see another guest. Here are the rated villas, from an Ishigaki beach to a Hakone hillside.

Island villas
The most complete privacy is out on the islands. Jusandi keeps just five villas on Ishigaki, each with its own pool; COVA KAKUDA puts four suites on the Shima coast of Ise-Shima; and TAYUTA runs villa-style rooms with a free-flowing spring in the Amakusa islands of Kyushu. These are stays where you might not leave the villa for a full day and not feel you missed anything.
Villas near the cities
You do not have to fly to the islands for it. In Hakone, ESPACIO The Hakone Geihinkan gives you a whole nine-room villa building, and Hakone Kairai keeps a single detached house with its own bath an hour from Tokyo. In Shikoku, ANABUKI-TEI is one restored villa in Takamatsu. These pair the privacy of a villa with the ease of a short trip.

Do villa stays still include meals?
Usually yes — most are run like a ryokan or auberge, with dinner and breakfast either brought to the villa or served in a main building. A few lean more self-catered with a kitchen; the individual pages spell out which is which.
If a full-service property matters more than having an entire building, compare luxury resorts. For a coast-first trip, continue to seaside and island hotels.
