COVA KAKUDA is a retreat of four private villas on an inlet of Ago Bay in Shima, Mie; it is part of the family-owned Kakuda Pearl company and occupies the site of a disused Akoya pearl farm and workshop dating from 1931. Every villa looks out over the inlet, keeps wooden ceiling beams from its days as a pearl-farming factory, and the rooms have private saunas. Meals are washoku-based 'satoumi cuisine' built on Shima seafood and local ingredients, cooked by a Japanese chef born and raised in Shima. The stay is all-inclusive, with experiences such as a pearl-farm visit, a sunset cruise and a stargazing campfire, and the owner describes it as a retreat for adults.
