Bays and the Inland Sea
On the calmer water, the mood is quiet and painterly. Amanemu looks over the pearl-farm bays of Ise-Shima; Azumi Setoda sits on a lemon island on the Shimanami route; and Benesse House puts you on Naoshima, where the art meets the sea. This is the sheltered, island-dotted coast — the Japan of ferries and long horizons rather than surf.
The open sea and the reef
Further out, the water turns to open sea and coral.
