The outer islands
The finest of Okinawa's rated stays are out on the smaller islands, where the water is clearest. Rosewood Miyakojima sits on a beach on Miyako, and Jusandi keeps just five villas on Ishigaki, each with its own pool. These are fly-and-flop stays in the best sense — you come for the reef and the quiet, not for a sightseeing itinerary.
The main island
On the main island, closer to Naha and easier to reach, Halekulani Okinawa brings the Hawaiian grand-resort tradition to the Onna coast, and Hyakuna Garan keeps a smaller, sea-facing retreat in the south. Both are two-Key houses, and both make the case that Okinawa's version of luxury is horizontal — long beaches and low buildings, not tatami and mountains.

Do Okinawa stays have onsen?
Generally not — Okinawa is about the sea, not the hot spring, so expect beaches, pools and spas rather than an open-air onsen. If a soak is what you are after, this is the one region to plan around a different pleasure.
