Izu: the onsen coast
Shizuoka's Izu Peninsula holds the region's crown: Asaba, a three-Key Relais & Châteaux ryokan with a Noh stage standing over its pond, has taken guests for five centuries. Around it, arcana izu and a cluster of one-Key houses run the peninsula's free-flowing hot spring.
Karuizawa & Kanazawa
Inland, Nagano's Karuizawa is where Tokyo goes to breathe — Shishi-Iwa House, designed by Pritzker laureate Shigeru Ban, and a run of FUFU and Hiramatsu houses sit in the woods. West again, Ishikawa's craft country holds Beniya Mukayu, a Relais & Châteaux member in the Kaga hot springs, and Wanosato in the Takayama hills of neighbouring Gifu.
