THE GUIDE

The rated stays at the foot of Mount Fuji are on two different sides of it. FUFU Kawaguchiko is on the Yamanashi side, by Lake Kawaguchi; GORA KADAN FUJI and the Fuji Speedway Hotel are on the Shizuoka side, in Oyama near Gotemba. The side decides how you get there from Tokyo, so we compare them that way first.

The short answer

Mount Fuji from the room, by the lakes: FUFU Kawaguchiko — every room is a suite with a view of the mountain and an open-air hot-spring bath. A ryokan reached by Shinkansen: GORA KADAN FUJI, a Relais & Châteaux member with 42 suites, each with a private bath, and a pickup from Gotemba Station. A large hotel with a circuit next door: Fuji Speedway Hotel, 120 rooms beside the Fuji Speedway and its motorsports museum.

Choose by how you travel from Tokyo

North side (Fuji Five Lakes). FUFU Kawaguchiko’s official access page gives about 135 minutes by train from Shinjuku (limited express to Otsuki, then the Fujikyuko Line to Kawaguchiko Station) or about 100 minutes by express bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station, then about 15 minutes by taxi. Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai and the Kawaguchiko shrines are on this side.

East side (Gotemba and Oyama). GORA KADAN FUJI gives the Tokaido Shinkansen from Shinagawa to Mishima (about 35 minutes) and a taxi of about 40 minutes, or a pickup from Gotemba Station on request; by car, about an hour on the Tomei Expressway to Gotemba Interchange and about 20 minutes more. Hyatt puts the Fuji Speedway Hotel about 20 minutes by car (13 km) from JR Gotemba Station. From Kyoto, the inn gives about two hours on the Hikari to Mishima.

Both sides in one trip. FUFU Kawaguchiko’s directions from Gotemba Interchange run about 30 minutes on the Higashi-Fujigoko Road to Fujiyoshida Interchange and about 15 minutes more, so a night on each side is a short drive apart.

What each official site says about the view

FUFU Kawaguchiko states that all rooms are suites with a view of Mount Fuji; some suites, including the top-floor one, also look over Lake Kawaguchi. GORA KADAN FUJI describes the inn as looking directly west toward the summit. Hyatt’s pre-opening fact sheet for the Fuji Speedway Hotel speaks of views of Mount Fuji but does not say every room has one; each of its 120 rooms has a balcony or terrace. Mount Fuji is often hidden by cloud, so a view is never guaranteed on a given day.

Prices in your currency (≈ US$…) are converted at the Oct 7, 2026 reference rate and are indicative only.

A yen price marked ≈ is itself an estimate: halved from a published two-person total, or rounded from an earlier figure. Totals for 2 assume two guests sharing one room.

Who each side suits

The north side suits travellers who want the classic lake-and-mountain sights — Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai, the Kawaguchiko shrines — and are happy with a train or bus from Shinjuku. The east side suits travellers already on the Tokaido Shinkansen and anyone coming for the Fuji Speedway. For an onsen town closer to Tokyo, compare Hakone; for the coast, Izu and Atami.

Is GORA KADAN FUJI in Hakone?

No. It shares a name with Gora Kadan in Hakone, but it is in Subashiri, Oyama-cho, Shizuoka, on the east foot of Mount Fuji.

Which stay is easiest without a car?

GORA KADAN FUJI offers a pickup from Gotemba Station (call on arrival). For FUFU Kawaguchiko, the official access page gives about 15 minutes by taxi from Kawaguchiko Station; ask the inn about any pickup.

Can I see Mount Fuji from the room?

FUFU Kawaguchiko states that every room has a view of Mount Fuji. GORA KADAN FUJI faces the summit, and the Fuji Speedway Hotel’s fact sheet mentions views of the mountain, but neither states it room by room. On any day, cloud can hide the mountain.
