Rated Onsen Stays Within a Couple of Hours of Tokyo
You do not need a flight or a bullet-train marathon to reach a rated onsen. Within about two and a half hours of Tokyo — Hakone, the Izu coast, Nikko's lake, the Fuji lakes, the Nasu highlands — sit some of the best hot-spring stays in the country, several of them three- and two-Key houses. This is the list for a weekend when the city is enough of a base.

Under two hours
The closest are almost commutable. Atami is about forty minutes by Shinkansen, where ATAMI SEKAIE runs a sea-view onsen; Hakone is ninety minutes to Gora Kadan, Hakone Ginyu and FUFU Hakone. This is the ring most Tokyo residents reach for on a Friday night — close enough to leave after work and still make dinner.
Two to two-and-a-half hours
Push a little further and the choices open up. Kawaguchiko Fufu looks straight at Mount Fuji across the lake; The Ritz-Carlton and FUFU Nikko sit above Lake Chuzenji; Bettei Senjuan is up in the Gunma mountains; and the Nasu highlands add Nasu Bettei Kai. All are doable as a one-night trip, and better as two.

Which is the easiest rated onsen from Tokyo without a car?
Hakone and Atami. Both are on direct train lines — the Odakyu Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto, the Shinkansen to Atami — and the houses arrange a pickup from the station. Nikko and the Fuji lakes are just as reachable but a little longer.
