Onsen Ryokan or City Hotel: Which Rated Stay to Book
Japan's rated stays split into two very different experiences, and the biggest mistake first-timers make is booking the wrong one for the trip. An onsen ryokan is about the bath, the tatami room and a kaiseki dinner brought to you; a city hotel is about space, a spa, a view and a restaurant you go down to. Here is how to tell which one you actually want.

Two different nights
At an onsen ryokan, the evening is choreographed: you arrive mid-afternoon, change into a yukata, bathe, and dinner comes to your room or a private dining room course by course. At a city hotel, the day is yours — check in late, use the spa, book a table, keep your own hours. Neither is better; they answer different questions. The ryokan is a ritual you surrender to; the hotel is a base you run yourself.

So which — and can you do both?
For a first trip, the honest answer is one of each. Base in Tokyo or Kyoto at a city hotel for the sightseeing — Aman Tokyo, Palace Hotel Tokyo, HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO — then add a night or two at an onsen ryokan like Asaba or Gora Kadan to slow down. The two barely overlap, and doing both is how most people end up understanding what they actually prefer for the next trip.

Can I sightsee from an onsen ryokan?
Not really — a ryokan is the destination, with dinner at a fixed hour and the day built around the bath. If you want to be out sightseeing until evening, book a hotel; save the ryokan for the part of the trip where slowing down is the plan.
