How to Choose Your First Rated Stay in Japan
The rated catalogue can be overwhelming on a first look — 100-odd houses across nine regions, in ryokan, hotel, auberge and villa forms. But choosing your first one comes down to four questions, in order: which region, ryokan or hotel, how many nights, and how far ahead you can book. Answer those and the list narrows itself.

Start with the region, not the hotel
The single biggest mistake is falling for one famous house and bending the whole trip around it. Pick the region first — most first trips run Tokyo–Kyoto with an onsen night nearby. That points you at Hakone or Izu off Tokyo, and at the Kyoto ryokan and Ise-Shima off Kansai. Once the map is set, the rated stays inside it are a short, manageable list rather than a hundred tabs.
Then pick the form — and book early
With the region set, choose ryokan or hotel (see the comparison guide if you are unsure), and be honest about nights: one ryokan night is a taste, two is the experience. Then book as far ahead as you can. The smallest and highest-rated houses — the three-Key ryokan, the two-room places — sell out months out, especially in autumn and over the New Year. For a first stay, an approachable icon like Gora Kadan, Hiiragiya or FUFU Hakone rarely disappoints.

How many nights should my first ryokan stay be?
Two if you can. One night rushes the ritual — you arrive, bathe, eat and leave before it settles. A second night is when you actually relax into the rhythm of the place, take a morning bath without a train to catch, and understand why people love it.
