With a rated stay, the season is not a detail — it can be the whole reason to pick one house over another. Snow crab makes a San'in winter; maples make a Kyoto November; deep snow makes Niseko and the north. Here is how to match the month to the stay, and which houses are worth planning a trip's dates around.

Autumn and winter: the peak seasons
For many rated stays, autumn is the peak: Kyoto's ryokan and Nikko's lake hotels are at their most beautiful under maples in November, and they book out first. Winter splits in two. In the San'in and Kinosaki, it is snow-crab season — Nishimuraya Honkan builds its whole winter around it. In Niseko and the north, it is the deep powder. Both are worth fixing a trip's dates around.
Spring, summer and the quiet months
Spring brings the cherry blossom, brief and unbookable in advance — aim for late March to mid-April in the west, later north, and keep plans loose. Summer belongs to the highlands: Karuizawa, Nasu and the northern mountains are cool while the cities swelter. And the quiet months — early December, late January, June before the rains settle — are when the hardest ryokan are at their most reachable and often cheapest.

When is the cheapest time for a rated stay?
The quiet months between the peaks — early December before the New Year rush, late January and February away from the ski areas, and June before the summer highland season. Weekday nights in these windows are where the famous houses are both cheapest and easiest to get.
