SATOYAMA JUJO is a 13-room inn in the forest of Minamiuonuma, Niigata, opened in May 2014 and centred on a 150-year-old traditional house (kominka) that holds the reception, among five buildings in total. Rooms are individually furnished with designer furniture and art; six look toward Mt. Makihata, six face the forest, and one is a detached annex, with some rooms having open-air baths. The hot-spring bath draws on the Osawayama Onsen source and looks out over the surrounding mountains. Dinner follows a "local gastronomy" approach that reworks the snow country's fermentation and preserved-food traditions, and the inn is set up primarily for adults, with service run hotel-style rather than by room attendants.
