THE GUIDE
Izu and Atami give a trip from Tokyo several different bases: Atami on the Tokaido Shinkansen, the inns of Shuzenji and Yugashima in central Izu, and the coasts to the east, south and west. We separated the peninsula from the rest of Shizuoka and compared only the rated stays that fit an Izu or Atami trip, district by district.

The short answer
A historic ryokan in Shuzenji: Asaba, opened in 1484 in front of Shuzen-ji, with three MICHELIN Keys and Relais & Châteaux membership. A modern stay in Yugashima: arcana izu, 16 rooms, each with a private kakenagashi bath. By the sea in Atami: ATAMI SEKAIE, 25 rooms, each with a private kakenagashi bath. A small house on the west coast: Fugaku Gunjo, eight rooms, each with a private bath. A second inn in Yugashima: Ochiairo, 16 rooms.

Choose the right base
Atami is about an hour from Tokyo by Tokaido Shinkansen, so it fits a one-night add-on. Shuzenji is about 140 minutes from Tokyo on the direct Limited Express Odoriko; its inns are about 7 minutes from the station by taxi, and Yugashima is about 20 minutes by car. Shimoda, at the southern end, is about 2 hours 30 minutes on the Odoriko. The west coast faces Suruga Bay: Numazu Club is about 20 minutes by taxi from Mishima Station on the Shinkansen, and Fugaku Gunjo is reached by car or by the Suruga Bay ferry from Shimizu Port to Toi Port. GORA KADAN FUJI and the Fuji Speedway Hotel are in Shizuoka too, but in Oyama at the foot of Mount Fuji, so they are compared in the Mount Fuji guide instead.

Who should choose Izu
Izu suits travellers who want onsen without a domestic flight, or a Tokyo trip with a night or two at an inn, choosing between Atami, the Shuzenji valleys and the coast. It is less suitable if you need ski access or a dense city itinerary. Compare Hakone and Mount Fuji, also within reach of Tokyo, or Kaga Onsen for a route through several onsen towns.

Is Atami part of Izu?
It sits at the peninsula’s gateway and works naturally in the same trip, but it is a distinct base. This guide labels Atami separately so travel time is clear.
How many nights should I spend?
One night works for Atami. Use two nights for Shuzenji plus the coast, or for a slower stay at one inn.
