Takefue is a secluded ryokan at Manganji, Minamioguni, in the Aso district of Kumamoto, about ten minutes by taxi from Kurokawa Onsen, where guests can hear rustling bamboo and wild birds. All 12 rooms are of different types and sleep two to six guests, each with its own hot spring bath whose temperature can usually be adjusted by a valve. Instead of a large public bath there are three private open-air baths (Chikurin no Yu, Oku no Yu and a cave bath), free for staying guests by reservation, plus a sauna and the Zen Spa. Dinner and breakfast are served in your room, with dinner a monthly-changing creative kaiseki built on seasonal local Kumamoto ingredients. Free pick-up from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop is offered on request when booking, though not always in busy periods.
