The Ryokan Collection: Every Member in Japan
The Ryokan Collection is an association of 46 Japanese inns that admits by mystery-guest stay and a vote of its board. This site carries all 46 of them — the only roster it holds in full. The number worth pausing on is the other one: 35 of those members hold no MICHELIN Key at all.

How a ryokan gets in
Someone stays without saying who they are, scores the stay against a published standard, and the board votes. That is the whole mechanism, and the association writes it down — which is more than most bodies do. It is not a magazine list, not a paid placement, and not a score derived from guest reviews.
What MICHELIN does not reach
Of the 46 members, 35 hold no MICHELIN Key. That is not a gap in the Collection — it is a gap in the Key. MICHELIN's Japan index runs to 405 properties, 128 of them keyed, and a large share of these houses are not in it at any level. Kayotei is ten rooms in Yamanaka Onsen and says so itself: "a boutique ryokan with only ten rooms." It appears nowhere in that index. Nor does Kurokawa Onsen, the whole hot-spring town, where Takefue keeps twelve detached rooms and thirty baths.

And the eleven that hold both
The remaining 11 members do hold Keys, and they are not the modest end of the roster — Gora Kadan has three, Zaborin two. Two bodies judging by different methods, landing on the same houses, is the closest thing to corroboration this catalogue can offer.

Is membership bought?
No. Admission is by an unannounced inspection stay scored against a published standard, then a board vote. Members pay dues once admitted, as members of any association do, but dues do not open the door.
How complete is this list?
Complete. The association states 46 members and this site carries 46. Every other roster here is partial — MICHELIN's Japan Keys run to 128 and the catalogue holds 126.
