Takinoya is a ryokan in Noboribetsu Onsen in southern Hokkaido, run by the Suga family since it began as a small restaurant in 1918, with a Japanese garden. Its 30 rooms range from Japanese and Japanese-Western rooms with indoor baths to 12 rooms with an open-air bath fed directly by hot spring water, plus three Western rooms for solo travellers. Two public bath areas, Kumoi no Yu on the top floor and Chien no Yu in the basement, use water from the Jigokudani source, with four spring types: sulphur, iron, salt and radium. Breakfast and dinner, a seasonal kaiseki-style course of local produce, are served in fully private dining rooms overlooking the garden. Depending on type, rooms take up to two to five guests.
