Ryokan Kurashiki stands in the heart of Kurashiki's Bikan Historical Quarter, at the crook of the willow-lined old canal, in a renovated former sugar wholesaler's mansion and storehouse built in the Edo period; it was founded in 1957. The main building has eight rooms, several converted from former sugar and rice storehouses and most combining a Japanese-style room with a Western-style bedroom, and two townhouses over 100 years old are each let to one group a day. Its private bath has an Aji stone tub, and each group can use it for 50 minutes. Dinner is a seasonal kaiseki based on Setouchi produce, served, like breakfast, in a restaurant that looks out on a Japanese garden passed down since the Edo period.
