Rated Stays in Chugoku & the Seto Inland Sea

This is the Japan of island-dotted horizons, Miyajima's floating torii, and the preserved merchant quarter of Kurashiki — and a set of ryokan that trade drama for a long, low view over the water.

The Inland Sea coast
The San'yo side faces the Inland Sea, and its rated houses face the water with it. Sekitei keeps a garden ryokan near the Miyajima ferries; Azumi Setoda, on the Shimanami cycling route, is a 140-year-old merchant house reworked into an inn; and Ryokan Kurashiki sits inside the preserved canal quarter of Kurashiki. These are stays about a view and a town, not a mountain onsen.
Behind the mountains: San'in
Cross the mountains to the San'in coast and the mood turns to onsen. In Yamaguchi's Nagato Yumoto, Bettei Otozure runs a designed riverside ryokan and the grand Otani Sanso anchors the town; inland in Okayama, Kifu no Sato keeps a quiet hot-spring house at Yunogo. It is the less-travelled half of the region, and the better half for a soak.

Is the Inland Sea worth a detour from Kyoto or Hiroshima?
Yes, especially paired with the art islands. Hiroshima and Miyajima are the gateway; from there the Shimanami route, Kurashiki and Naoshima are all within a couple of hours, and the sea is the point the whole way.
