Opened in 1953 as the rest house of a Zen temple.

Yufuin Tamanoyu began in 1953 as a retreat for a Zen temple and sits on a quiet lane off Yunotsubo Kaido street. Its 16 rooms are mostly detached cottages scattered through woodland, and most pair a Japanese tatami room with a Western twin bedroom. Every room has its own wooden indoor bath filled with free-flowing hot spring water, and there is also a large shared bath. Meals are served in the dining room Budouya or a private dining room; the cooking follows the food philosophy of the cooking researcher Yoshiko Tatsumi and uses local, seasonal ingredients. Children's dinner and breakfast menus are offered, though five rooms do not accept families with preschool children.
