The one-Key tier is the entry point to the MICHELIN Guide, and by far its largest category. You will find everything from a historic Kyoto ryokan to an intimate forest auberge. This is where the real character lives, making it the smartest place to begin your search.

Ryokan and Auberges
Look at Hiiragiya Ryokan in Kyoto, a 28-room traditional inn that also holds a Relais & Châteaux designation. Compare that to Auberge TOKITO in Tokyo, which strips the concept down to just four rooms, each with a private bath. In Nagano, Shoraiso offers a tiny footprint of five rooms with free-flowing onsen. The sheer contrast shows exactly how wide this tier spans.
Brand Retreats and Auberges
Hospitality brands scale the one-Key experience without losing focus. FUFU Hakone manages 39 rooms with private baths, while HOSHINOYA Kyoto maintains 25 rooms. For a deeper retreat, arcana izu and nasu mukunone operate as dedicated, food-focused auberges. Further west, Azumi Setoda in Hiroshima adapts the ryokan format into 22 private-bath equipped rooms.

Do one-Key stays have private baths?
Many do. Beniya Mukayu in Ishikawa and Oyado The Earth in Mie both feature private baths in every room.
