Choose the right base
Atami is easiest for a one-night add-on from Tokyo and gives you ocean views. Shuzenji and central Izu trade convenience for cedar valleys, historic architecture and a stronger ryokan rhythm. West and south Izu require more transfer time, but reward it with open sea, sunsets and smaller properties. Do not select only by prefecture: Fuji Speedway Hotel and GORA KADAN FUJI are in Shizuoka but belong to a Fuji/Oyama itinerary, so they are excluded here.

Who should choose Izu
Izu suits couples who want onsen without a domestic flight, travellers pairing Tokyo with one serious ryokan, and anyone choosing between food, sea and traditional service. It is less suitable if you need ski access, a dense urban itinerary or a direct airport transfer. Is Atami part of Izu?
It sits at the peninsula’s gateway and works naturally in the same trip, but it is a distinct base. This guide labels Atami separately so travel time is clear.
How many nights should I spend?
One night works for Atami. Use two nights for Shuzenji plus the coast, or for a slower stay at a destination ryokan.
