THE GUIDE
The catalogue’s rated stays in Nara are in Nara city. Shisui, FUFU Nara and JW Marriott Hotel Nara hold one MICHELIN Key each; Noborioji Hotel Nara is a Relais & Châteaux member. Shisui, Noborioji and FUFU sit on the edge of Nara Park, near Kintetsu Nara Station; JW Marriott is on the west side of the centre, closer to the Heijo Palace site. Nara is about 34 minutes from Kyoto or Osaka-Namba by Kintetsu, so the first decision is whether to stay at all — then which side of the city.

Which side of Nara?
Nara Park & Noborioji. The western edge of the park, on the Kintetsu Nara Station side. The park is about 8 minutes’ walk from the station and Shisui about 15; Noborioji Hotel Nara is in the same Noborioji-cho, about 500 m west of Shisui by the stays’ recorded coordinates. Kofuku-ji, Todai-ji, the Nara National Museum and the Isuien and Yoshikien gardens are all on foot; Shisui adjoins Yoshikien.
Takabatake & Naramachi. The south side of the park, by Kasuga Taisha and Shin-Yakushi-ji, with the old merchant streets of Naramachi to the west. FUFU Nara is about 5 minutes by taxi from Kintetsu Nara Station, or about 10 from JR Nara Station, and runs no shuttle.
Omiya-dori & Heijo Palace. West of the centre, about 10 minutes’ walk from Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station. The Heijo Palace site — the Former Imperial Audience Hall is about 20 minutes’ walk from the south exit of Kintetsu Yamato-Saidaiji Station — and the Nishinokyo temples, Yakushi-ji and Toshodai-ji, are on this side of the city. JW Marriott Hotel Nara is about 2.7 km in a straight line from Shisui, so Nara Park is a bus or taxi ride.
Day trip or overnight?
| From | Route | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Kyoto Station | Kintetsu Limited Express → Kintetsu-Nara | About 34 min |
| Kyoto Station | JR Rapid → JR Nara | About 41 min |
| Osaka-Namba | Kintetsu Express → Kintetsu-Nara | About 34 min |
| Osaka Station | JR Rapid → JR Nara | About 52 min |
| Kansai Airport | JR to Tennoji, then JR Rapid → JR Nara | About 31 + 36 min |
At about half an hour from Kyoto or Namba, the daytime sights fit a day trip. Staying the night matters when the plan includes Nara’s evening rites, which start after dark: the Shuni-e torches at Todai-ji’s Nigatsu-do (1–14 March, from 19:00 each evening; 19:30 on the 12th, 18:30 on the 14th), the Mantoro lantern festivals at Kasuga Taisha (Setsubun in February, from 18:00; 14 and 15 August, from 19:00) and Wakakusa Yamayaki (fourth Saturday of January, fireworks from 18:15). Some stays also schedule their own hours: Shisui serves free-flow champagne to hotel guests from 17:00 to 19:00, and Noborioji Hotel Nara offers staying guests a free early-morning walk around Nara.
Two stations matter. Shisui, Noborioji Hotel Nara and FUFU Nara are reached from Kintetsu-Nara, so the Kintetsu lines from Kyoto and Namba are the direct choice. JW Marriott Hotel Nara is nearest to Shin-Omiya on the Kintetsu Nara Line.
Choose by itinerary
One night between Kyoto and Osaka. Kintetsu from Kyoto to Kintetsu-Nara, an afternoon at Kofuku-ji and Todai-ji, the night at Shisui or Noborioji Hotel Nara, Kasuga Taisha the next morning, then Kintetsu on to Osaka-Namba.
One night for the bath. FUFU Nara has a natural hot-spring open-air bath in every room and no communal bath; dinner is Nara-style kaiseki or teppanyaki at its restaurant (teppanyaki is not open to children under 10).
Two nights with the Heijo Palace site and Nishinokyo. JW Marriott Hotel Nara puts the west side of the city — the Heijo Palace site, Yakushi-ji, Toshodai-ji — closer, with Nara Park a ride away; children of any age are accepted.

Who Nara suits
Stay in Nara if the evening rites are on your dates, you want a hot-spring bath in the room within about half an hour of Kyoto or Osaka, or you want to break the trip between Kyoto and Osaka with a night. Look elsewhere if you want a wider choice of stays: see Kyoto, about half an hour away by Kintetsu. For the rest of the region, see Kansai and Ise-Shima.

Is Nara better as a day trip or an overnight stay?
For the daytime sights a day trip works: Kintetsu takes about 34 minutes from Kyoto or Osaka-Namba. Stay overnight if your dates include an evening rite — Shuni-e (1–14 March), the Mantoro lantern festivals (Setsubun in February; 14–15 August) or Wakakusa Yamayaki (fourth Saturday of January).
Which Nara stays have a hot-spring bath?
FUFU Nara has a natural hot-spring open-air bath in every room and no shared bath. At Shisui, 23 of the 43 rooms have an onsen or open-air onsen bath, and hotel guests can book one of two private spa rooms with open-air onsen baths.
Can children stay?
At FUFU Nara and JW Marriott Hotel Nara, children of any age are accepted (FUFU’s teppanyaki is not open to under-10s). At Shisui, children 12 and under stay free when sharing a bed. Noborioji Hotel Nara takes guests aged 13 and over only.
Can I see Kofuku-ji’s five-storey pagoda?
Not from outside for now. The pagoda is under a major conservation repair, covered by a temporary roof, with completion planned for fiscal 2034, according to the Nara City Tourism Association.
