THE GUIDE

The catalogue's Hyogo stays are each in a different place: Nakanobo Zuien in Arima Onsen, in Kobe's Kita ward; Nishimuraya Honkan in Kinosaki Onsen, near the Sea of Japan; and Villa Rakuen at Sumoto Onsen on Awaji Island. They are hours apart, so the first choice is the place. Kobe's Sannomiya is the hub between them.

The short answer

Shortest trip from Osaka or Kobe: Nakanobo Zuien in Arima, about 30 minutes from Sannomiya. Two MICHELIN Keys, in the public-bath town: Nishimuraya Honkan in Kinosaki, also a Relais & Châteaux member. An open-air bath in every room, with young children welcome: Villa Rakuen on Awaji Island.

Choose by itinerary

From Kyoto. Kinosaki is the direct one: about 2 hours 20 minutes on the Limited Express Kinosaki. Arima is about 70 minutes by bus from the Hachijo exit of Kyoto Station. Awaji is reached through Kobe or Osaka.

From Osaka. Arima is about 1 hour by train from JR Osaka Station; Kinosaki about 2 hours 40 minutes on the Limited Express Konotori; Sumoto about 120 minutes by highway bus from Osaka Umeda.

From Kobe (Sannomiya). Arima about 30 minutes, Kinosaki about 2 hours 30 minutes on the Limited Express Hamakaze, Sumoto about 90 minutes by highway bus over the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.

Two places in one trip. Arima is about 30 minutes from Sannomiya, so it fits before or after a day in Kobe, or next to either of the others. Kinosaki is at the north end of the prefecture and Awaji at the south; going from one to the other through Sannomiya adds up to about 2 hours 30 minutes plus about 90 minutes, before transfers — in practice a travel day.

Who each place suits

Arima suits a one-night onsen stop on a Kyoto–Osaka–Kobe trip; Nakanobo Zuien does not accept guests under 13. Kinosaki suits travellers who want to walk between the town’s seven public bathhouses, and winter visitors coming for crab (early November to the end of March); Nishimuraya Honkan takes guests aged 10 and over. Awaji suits a sea-facing stay with a private open-air bath, including families: Hotel New Awaji, of which Villa Rakuen is the suite wing, offers children’s yukata and baby meals.
