The concrete of Tadao Ando
No architect has shaped this list more than Tadao Ando. Benesse House on Naoshima is a museum you sleep inside; SETOUCHI RETREAT AONAGI near Matsuyama is a former private museum of his, now seven suites over the sea; and The Shinmonzen brings his board-formed concrete into the wooden streets of Gion. If you want to understand the Ando idea — light, water, a single considered view — you can now do it from a bed.
Timber, restoration and the resort brands
Beyond Ando, the range is wide. Shishi-Iwa House in Karuizawa is a low timber retreat by Pritzker laureate Shigeru Ban; Azumi Setoda is a 140-year-old merchant house reworked into an inn by the founder of Aman; and Aman's own Tokyo and Kyoto houses, by Kerry Hill Architects, translate the ryokan's calm into stone and glass. Which is the best architecture stay for a first visit?
Benesse House, if you can get to Naoshima — it is the purest fusion of a museum and a hotel, and the island around it is a full architecture trip on its own. For something on the mainland, Aman Kyoto or Shishi-Iwa House make the case without a ferry.
