These rated houses run from about US$700 to well over US$1,050 per person a night. Amanemu, an Aman resort on Ise-Shima Bay, is the only three-Key house among them; Auberge TOKITO near Tokyo sits at the very top of the range. What the price buys is nearly always the same three things: a private onsen bath, a multi-course kaiseki dinner, and very few rooms.

Is it worth it?
At this level you are paying for scarcity as much as luxury: a house with eight rooms cannot be scaled, and the kaiseki is cooked for that evening's guests alone. Whether that is worth twice the price of an excellent one-Key ryokan is a personal call — but if a once-in-a-decade night is the point, this is the shelf it sits on.

Is the price per person or per room?
Per person, and it almost always includes dinner and breakfast — the ryokan convention. A room rate elsewhere is not comparable.
Which is the most expensive?
Auberge TOKITO opens the range highest; Amanemu reaches furthest at the top of a suite. Rates shift by season — the cards link through to live prices.
