What kakenagashi does — and does not — mean
The Japan Spa Association defines kakenagashi as continuously adding new hot-spring water and discharging overflow without returning it to the bath. Heating can still be used when disclosed, so “kakenagashi” is not automatically the same as “100% source water, no heating.” It also says nothing about whether the bath is indoors, outdoors, communal or in your room. Is kakenagashi always unheated and undiluted?
No. The overflow is not reused, but disclosed heating can still occur. “100% source-water kakenagashi” is the stricter expression.
