Yamagata the Takinami is a ryokan in Akayu Onsen, Nanyo, about five minutes by taxi from Akayu Station on the Yamagata Shinkansen. Its 19 rooms come in three types: KURA, built from a relocated and renovated storehouse; SAKURA, which looks out over cherry trees; and YAMAGATA, furnished with furniture and art made in Yamagata. Every room has a private open-air bath with hot spring water piped directly from the source, and there are also separate men's and women's public baths. Meals are served in the restaurant ukitomam, which centres on organic, pesticide-free traditional vegetables and rice from the Okitama region. The lounge pairs Japanese architecture with Scandinavian furniture and becomes a self-service bar in the evening.
