A kilometre of columnar basalt cliffs dropping sheer into the Sea of Japan — one of only a handful of such formations on earth, and a short drive from the onsen.
Founded in 1884, burned down in 2018, rebuilt by 2021.
Beniya is a ryokan at Awara Onsen in Fukui Prefecture with 17 rooms, each with a semi-open-air bath of free-flowing hot spring water. Room types range from an 86.2 sq m sukiya-style special room to standard rooms with a dining room, and every room offers dining at a table with chairs. Seasonal kaiseki made with local seafood and produce from local farmers is brought to the room, including Echizen crab courses in winter, and breakfast uses free-range eggs and ingredients delivered directly from local farmers. Rooms require at least two guests, and children are accepted.
